Why Celebrating Your Wins is Important
There is an Art to Celebrating Your Wins (Big or Small)
I will admit, I tell my students to celebrate their accomplishments - but I don’t always follow that advice…I’m working on it though! The reason I harp on it is because I know that this industry can be challenging. Trying to eventually live out your dreams as a voice actor while living everyday life can sometimes feel like a battle if you give in to the challenging days. So that’s why I say celebrate your wins. And when I say WINS I don’t always mean booking a gig. Sometimes those wins are smaller and can look like this:
Getting your website finished
Setting up your invoices/payment processors
Going to a networking event for the first time
Building your home studio using the space you have
Saving up to purchase equipment
You'll encounter numerous victories, both big and small, that deserve to be celebrated. Let’s talk about more about the importance of celebrating your wins and I’ll give you some simple, practical ways on how to do it effectively.
Understanding the Power of Celebrating Your Wins
Before diving into the how-to's, let's explore why celebrating your achievements is crucial for your journey as a voice actor. Here are a few compelling reasons:
1. Boosting Self-Esteem
Celebrating wins reinforces your belief in yourself and your abilities. Each accomplishment, whether it's landing a role or mastering a challenging technique, adds another layer of confidence to your skill set.
2. Motivation and Momentum
Acknowledging your successes keeps you motivated and hungry for more. It fuels your passion and provides the momentum needed to keep pushing forward, even in the face of obstacles.
3. Acknowledging Progress
Every step you take, no matter how small, is progress. Celebrating your wins allows you to appreciate how far you've come and encourages you to keep moving forward on your journey.
Practical Ways to Celebrate Your Wins
Now that you understand why celebrating wins is essential, let's delve into some practical strategies to make the most of these celebrations:
1. Keep a Win Journal
Create a dedicated journal or digital document where you can record all your achievements, big and small. Include details like the date, the accomplishment, and how it made you feel. Regularly revisit this journal to reflect on your progress and celebrate your growth.
2. Treat Yourself
After achieving a significant milestone, treat yourself to something special. It could be a favorite meal, a spa day, or even a mini-vacation. The key is to reward yourself in a way that brings you joy and reinforces the positive emotions associated with your success.
3. Share Your Success
Don't be shy about sharing your wins with others. Whether it's with friends, family, or fellow voice actors, sharing your accomplishments allows you to bask in the glow of your success and receive validation from those who support you.
4. Create Rituals
Develop rituals or routines around celebrating your wins. It could be as simple as popping a bottle of champagne, doing a victory dance, or treating yourself to your favorite dessert. By associating specific actions with celebration, you'll train your brain to recognize and appreciate your achievements.
5. Practice Gratitude
Take a moment each day to express gratitude for your wins, no matter how small they may seem. Gratitude shifts your focus from what you lack to what you have accomplished, fostering a positive mindset that fuels further success.
6. Reflect and Learn
Use your celebrations as an opportunity for reflection and learning. Consider what went well, what you could improve upon, and how you can apply these insights to future endeavors. Every win is an opportunity for growth and development.
Final Thoughts
As a voice actor, your journey will be filled with triumphs both big and small. By embracing the art of celebrating your wins, you'll not only boost your self-esteem but also fuel your motivation and momentum towards achieving your goals. Remember, every success, no matter how small, deserves to be acknowledged and celebrated. So go ahead, raise your voice in celebration, and watch as your confidence soars to new heights.
One of the biggest compliments from my students is that I help them feel more confident in their ability to take on what comes with being a new voice actor. The truth is, they are the ones who help themselves. They do so by showing up for themselves - studying VO, taking classes, taking consistent acting and committing themselves mentally and physically to becoming voice actors.
