One of my students asked me “Well, how do I get the client to choose me?” It’s not really a one word answer type of question - and it might not just be one thing you do that makes your potential client say “I choose you.” In the realm of voiceover work, talent alone isn't always enough to secure coveted roles or projects. You will have to learn how to market yourself effectively and try your best to “persuade” potential clients to choose you over another voice actor. Let’s look at some strategies and techniques that you can work on to possibly sway the needle in your direction and ultimately book more voiceover projects.

Understanding Your Client's Needs

Before diving into the tactics of persuasion, it's crucial for new voice actors to understand the needs and preferences of their potential clients. Each project comes with its own unique requirements, whether it's a commercial, video game, audiobook, or animation. By thoroughly researching the client and their project, you can tailor your approach to better meet the client's expectations. We have a lot of information at our fingertips now, so a quick web search does wonders. Search online to try to learn more about how your client operates, what types of projects they work on, and who they’ve chosen as talent before.

Building a Strong Portfolio

One of the most effective tools for persuading potential clients is a strong portfolio that showcases your range, ability, and versatility. A well-curated demo or string of spots should include samples of previous work across different genres and styles, allowing clients to assess the voice actor's suitability for their project. Additionally, including testimonials or endorsements from satisfied clients can help build credibility and trust.

Crafting a Compelling Pitch

When reaching out to potential clients, you should craft a compelling pitch that highlights your unique selling points and why you could be the best choice for an upcoming project.
